A doctoral candidate (3rd cycle) in urban studies at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), Carla is writing her thesis on the history of artistic signs in Montreal between 1843 and 1992. She's interested in how these objects have helped shape the city's visual and commercial landscape.

"From giant boot to dazzling light

(The Evolution of Montreal Signs, 1843-1930)

Did you know :

  • ... why did a carved sheep or an XXL boot once dominate Montreal's storefronts?
  • ... what invention has transformed the sign into a night-time beacon worthy of the great commercial arteries?
  • ... what unexpected and amusing bylaw forced our ancestor-teachers to reinvent their art?

To find out, join us for this exclusive mini-conference. In less than 30 minutes, you'll travel from 1843 to 1930, when artisan sculptors gave way to the new masters of light... and Sainte-Catherine Street lit up for the very first time.

Expect surprising anecdotes, rarely-seen archive images and, above all, a fresh look at our profession.

An authentic cobbler's emblem from the XIXᵉ century. This carved boot recalls the days when Montreal merchants used wooden symbols to guide passers-by.
